Christine Counsell

New thinking from old tools: why does knowledge matter in shaping a curriculum?

Christine will outline the research which explains why attention to knowledge is so critical in ensuring that pupils make progress, especially in reading.Using practical examples from Key Stages 2 and 3, she will examine the relationship between background knowledge and literacy and explain the critical importance of that knowledge for the disadvantaged. Christine will discuss the different kinds of knowledge that we need to attend to and she will explain why Ofsted is taking such a close interest in sequencing, scope, disciplinary rigour and coherence of subject teaching. She will emphasise the radical and emancipatory role of subjects in addressing problems of equity in our education system.
