All About High-Quality Outdoor Learning

Audience: EYFS Practitioners

From making dens and flying kites, to constructing waterways, we know that children thrive in the outdoors across the whole year. A well-planned outdoor area is a powerful learning environment for young children and should provide opportunities where they can develop and apply their existing skills and knowledge across all areas of the curriculum.

Drawing on examples of outstanding practice, this inspiring and practical course will enable you to optimise the quality of learning in the early years within your outside environment, develop a deeper understanding of how the characteristics of effective learning as well as critical skills such as language for thinking, literacy and maths can be effectively embedded and extended outdoors.

Building Learning Power: Exploring the Wonderful Possibilities of Block Play

Audience: EYFS practitioners

Well planned, effectively resourced block play enables young children to develop skills and explore ideas that support each area of learning. In addition to this, through problem solving, collaboration and the planning of ideas, block play provides the perfect context for learning to learn. In this highly practical session we will explore:

• how to plan an effective block play area
• the different developmental stages of block play
• what planning for effective block play should look like
• how block play can be used to support literacy skills and mathematical development

Photographs and case studies used as part of this session will inspire teachers and practitioners to develop their own block play environments.

Big, Big Maths: Working with Maths on a Large Scale

Audience: EYFS practitioners

During this twilight we will explore the ways in which children use their muscles and minds together as they learn. When they lift, carry, transport, dig, balance and fill they are exploring many of their own ideas and developing their understanding of key concepts. By exploring a wide range of possibilities with large, open-ended materials outdoor play can provide many opportunities for children to experience real mathematics on a large scale.
Through highly active, physical experiences children thoroughly embed their understanding of early mathematical concepts and learn to use mathematical vocabulary in purposeful and meaningful ways. This twilight will outline the key experiences, resources and organisation which are needed to support and extend children’s early mathematical thinking and will provide valuable strategies for providing inspiring maths in a big way.
