     Stronger Practice Hub

Childhaven Community Nursery School have recently been accredited Yorkshire and Humber Early Years Stronger Practice Hub

We are delighted to have been designated a Department for Education Early Years Stronger Practice Hub!
We are proud of the work we do here at Childhaven and we have been through a rigorous recruitment process to achieve this designation.
This is exciting news for all practitioners in the Yorkshire & Humber region who work with under-fives.
Early Years Stronger Practice Hubs will support Early Years settings to improve outcomes for children in their local area across EYFS.  Specifically focusing on areas of development that research informs us have been most impacted by COVID-19: personal social and emotional development (PSED), communication and language, and early literacy and maths.
Early Years Stronger Practice Hubs will support settings to adopt evidence-based practice improvements by:
  • Establishing local networks of settings to share knowledge and effective practice.
  • Proactively sharing information and advice on evidence-based approaches – for example through newsletters, blogs and social media.
  • Acting as a point of contact for bespoke advice, and signposting to other funded support.
  • Working with the EEF to select evidence-based programmes to fund and make available to settings.
We have partner settings across the region and we will deliver a blend of face-to-face and online sessions.

All of our offers are fully funded so this an exciting opportunity. We warmly welcome anyone working with children in the 0-4 age range from all sectors.

  • Outdoor Learning In The Revised EYFS

Join us at Childhaven, as we consider how our nursery garden provides opportunities for mathematical learning all year round. We are an outstanding nursery school and we embrace modern practices, with many influencers, including the work of Reggio Emilio, Ferre Laevers well-being and involvement scales, Anna Ephgrave’s In the Moment Planning, the Curiosity Approach, and the work of Greg Bottrill. We fully embrace working outdoors in all weathers. During each day there will be a mix of input / question and answer sessions and also practical observation of the school at work in its everyday wonder. There are three days, one in each term, so that you can see REAL progression over the year, and how we adjust the provision as the year goes on and for the different seasons. There will also be a focus on Mathematical Development on all the of the days, using latest research and recommendations from the EEF

  • Experience Days At Childhaven

We are an outstanding local authority maintained nursery school in a beautiful Victorian building in the heart of Scarborough. We are offering practitioners the opportunity to spend the day with us to engage in professional discussion around aspects of practice. Each day will be themed around ‘What makes outstanding?’ and include plenty of time with our wonderful staff and 2-4 year-old children in their everyday life in the school, balanced with opportunities for questions and professional discussion. On request, this day can be themed to include aspects that your team are developing if you want to visit as a larger group.

Stronger Practice Professional Discussion Groups

Join us to connect with others and discuss popular (and requested) aspects of current practice in a friendly and small group. To gain new ideas, celebrate and share your good practice . To spend quality time away from your own setting to reflect.

Monday 23rd January 2023 1pm - 3pm Using outdoors in the Winter - how do we offer opportunities in all weathers? How do we manage freeflow to outdoors?

Monday 27th February 1pm - 3pm Story telling - how do we use props and loose parts? When do we offer adult led sessions? How do we encourage child led story telling?

Monday 27th March 1pm-3pm In the Moment Planning - how do we organise this in our settings? Where are we on our journeys?

Each meeting will be an informal and friendly time to share practice and learn from each other. It may also be possible to see practice in action at Childhaven to support discussion.
